Magazine Cover- Avatar*

avaterThis cover is from the magazine Total Film, This cover is a very simple one and this is why i wanted to analyse it to see if it could still be as powerful as other covers i have looked at.

The most striking thing about this cover is the main image of Jake Sully(Sam Worthington) it is a close up of his upper body and face which covers over 70% of the whole magazine cover. This is a very striking photo Jake sully eyes just below the masthead. This is to make eye contact with the audience which is very powerful. The audience will get drawn over by the image and then the powerful eyes of Jake Sully will connect with the audience potentially leading to the reading of the magazine.

The masthead of this magazine is different to the previous Total Film Magazine due to the way most of this masthead is covered by Jake Sully head. This technique is used for only very high end magazines who have very good reputations. It is used so that an audience already knows what magazine it is only by a few of its letters. Only the top magazines can do this due to their hierarchy.

The skyline to this magazine is also slightly larger than normal, normally a skyline is a thin strip at the top of the page with some information such as actors names etc. Moreover this magazine has 3 big film names at the top of the page in the skyline, this is used to one promote the films which is good advertising for the film companies. It is also good for the magazine as having such big films on the front page the audience may want to read about and then this could lead to the sale of the magazine. I love having a slightly bigger skyline as it stands out more and doesn’t blend into the background so much.

The anchorage text on the bottom of the  main image is the film name, this is so so common for magazines to do this because the main image is used to draw in the audience and then the anchorage text tells the audience what film it is, the reason it is in bold and big is so that the audience remember it. The films slogan is below and this is fairly big writing and this is to stick in the audiences head so they remember what film.

The sell lines on this magazine cover are fairly basic and in comparison to the last poster that i analysed are not as clever with the composition, but they still serve a great purpose by being simple and getting the audience to read the magazine. They are a simple font and colour with the title being slightly darker and i do love this colour scheme being it contrast great with the rest of the magazine.

Overall this is a fairly simple but very effective magazine cover. I love the use of the massive photo which covers up most of the page, i wish to hopefully use something similar as i think it is very powerful and certainly catches the audiences eye. I also love the colour scheme and how well it links in with avatars blue. A great cover which i have taken lots of inspiration from.
